IOM joined the governments of El Salvador and Costa Rica to commemorate the 171th anniversary of uninterrupted diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The celebration included the presentation of the Costa Rican musical group La Cruceta, made up of 10 artists and led by Dionisio Cabal, in the Salvadoran capital as well as in the cities of Santa Ana and Suchitoto. The tour of the musicians was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of the Presidency of El Salvador, the Embassy of Costa Rica in El Salvador and IOM.

La Cruceta is known for La Cantata de la Guerra de 1856, which recalls the Salvadoran and Costa Rican military actions that led to the defeat of William Walker. Walker intended to annex Central America to the US's confederate southern states. According to historians, the campaigns against Walker in 1856 gave way to the idea of an integrated Central America and contributed to the creation of the concept of Latin America as a unit.
